Your work is fantastic.  I found you from your blog, I think I was googling sleep and drawing.  I also suffer from procrastination, but my problem is that whenever I attempt to draw, I get extremely sleepy.  Have you ever experienced this? Also drawing seems extremely scary, which is odd because I had no trouble becoming an excellent guitarist or vocalist, so it's not the learning curve and working that's my problem.  I just don't know how to get this to work for me...and I see that years later you're doing exactly what I want to do, which is concept design.

Yeah! Then my trick to draw more won't work for you :)

This sounds like you have an emotional aversion towards drawing... I can think of two reasons why that happens:

1) You want every piece of practice to be good, so you build up stress when you sit down to draw. You put pressure on yourself instead of being like "This is difficult, it might come out horrible, but I'll learn something!"

2) You very high goals and no day-to-day goals. If you're thinking of reaching a professional level, that's thousands of hours of work. That's damn tiring just to think about... So you can break up your goals from end goal to midterm goals to stuff you could do every day (are you familiar with David Allen's Getting Things Done?). And then you can just focus on whatever you do today, not worrying about the 10 000-hour journey.

Does any of that ring true? It might be cool to focus on quantity for now instead of quality or specific subjects. Like, just fill up a sketchbook with doodles and get that habit of daily drawing going.

I would recommend the iProcrastinate podcast by Tim Pychyl. While it's about procrastination, he focuses on procrastination being a coping mechanism for negative emotions. It might have some cool insights. At least you know that you can do it!

Eh... one last idea, could it be anything physical? Lack of sleep, lack of exercise, social isolation, need more exposure to daylight, consuming caffeine/sugar (and getting the crash), ... ?

Well it might be that I have no day-to-day goals.  I haven't really thought of it.  I'm a professional guitarist and musician and spent the better part of twenty years working on that, so I'm no stranger to big goals and achieving them little by little.  When I learned guitar I never had any of these problems though, so it's very strange to me.  However I started guitar when I was 16 years old and now I'm 39, so maybe I'm just an old dog and can't learn new tricks? ha.

It could be something physical, it literally drains me to draw.  Like a six hour run or something, I conk out exhausted, but yeah mental exhaustion versus physical exhaustion.  Though it can be hard to discern the physical or emotional drain, I'm very certain it's emotional.  Again it doesn't make sense to me at all.  I actually enjoy drawing more than I enjoy playing guitar.  Lack of sleep? No, I get 8 hours of sleep.  I exercise daily and I'm a diabetic so no to sugar and caffeine.  Social isolation is true, I have no friends here in Vegas.  And I suffer from high anxiety and started medication for that just four weeks ago.  I'd say that's maybe the problem but I have no issues doing anything else.  It's weird.  I have a lot of free time right now so I was hoping to spend a good chunk of it drawing.

I'll check out your link, maybe there's something in there that will help. Thanks for the reply! =D

Hey! I just posted it, a bunch of anons wrote it together. It could probably be improved, but it's nice to hear that it helped! :)

What are your goals in art?

Well I always wanted to do digital art. I gave it up years ago because life got busy. Now I'm slowly picking it up half way through college. I'm still /beg/ but I have hope I'll make it.

Just had a look through the gallery... skills, girl! You're living proof that pageviews aren't necessarily a reflection of talent.
